Frída s kolibříky
I love flowers and nature, and this is often reflected in my artwork. Perhaps that is why I so enjoy painting the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, whose work consists largely of self-portraits capturing her emotional states.
She is often depicted with striking flowers in her hair.
For this free reproduction of Frida Kahlo, I was inspired by her painting where she wears a necklace of thorns with a dead hummingbird hanging from it.
In Mexican culture, however, the hummingbird carries multiple symbolic meanings: it is considered a talisman of good luck in love as well as a symbol of the Aztec god of war.
My free reproduction therefore portrays Frida with living hummingbirds – one resting on her shoulder and another in her hair – as symbols of love.
